Infrastructure · Methodology

Self-hosting is a trade-off, not a religion.

A subpage of Infrastructure. We are known for pushing sovereignty and self-hosting — but we would rather lose a sale than sell you the wrong architecture.

The argument for owning your infrastructure

  • No mandatory rent on core systems — a subscription can be raised, changed, or discontinued by someone else at any time. Infrastructure you own cannot be taken away by a pricing-page update.
  • Data locality — where your data physically sits, and who can be legally compelled to hand it over, becomes your decision instead of a vendor's jurisdiction.
  • Predictable long-term cost — a three-year TCO on owned infrastructure is usually flatter than a stacked SaaS bill that increases with every renewal.
  • No forced obsolescence — a vendor's roadmap decisions (a deprecated feature, a discontinued tier) stop being your operational risk.

The honest limits

Self-hosting is not free, and pretending otherwise would contradict everything else on this site. It costs you:

  • Operational responsibility — someone has to patch, monitor, and respond to incidents. That someone is either your team (trained by us), an ongoing managed-operations retainer with us, or a managed hosting product like Numerimondes Cloud that carries the operational load for you.
  • Upfront setup cost — the migration or build-out has a real price, even when the long-term TCO favours ownership.
  • Speed to first deployment — spinning up a managed SaaS tool is often faster on day one than standing up a self-hosted equivalent.

Note that "self-hosted" and "self-operated" are not the same thing. You can own your code and data outright while still having someone else — us, via Numerimondes Cloud, or your own team — handle the day-to-day server management. Sovereignty is about ownership and control, not about who racks the server.

When we recommend renting instead

We say this plainly because it is true: if your usage is small, your team has no appetite for operational ownership, or the tool in question is not core to your competitive position, a SaaS subscription is often the right call — and we will tell you that in an audit rather than push a self-hosted alternative that does not fit.

Self-hosting earns its cost when a system is core to how you operate, when the three-year TCO clearly favours ownership, or when data locality is a genuine requirement — contractual, regulatory, or otherwise — not just a preference.

How we decide, in practice

This is exactly what an Audit is built to surface: a real, per-tool comparison of renting vs owning, using your actual invoices rather than a generic industry claim. The audit report gives you the number; Infrastructure work executes on it, and Numerimondes Cloud is where the resulting system can run if you want it managed rather than run entirely in-house.
